Both Android and iPhone devices have a setting called ‘Background App Refresh’. This setting allows the apps on your device to automatically search for new information even if they are not actively running on the screen. Not only does this setting drain your data, it also can have a negative impact on your phone’s battery life. This setting can be disabled across all apps on your mobile device or specific to each app. Follow the steps below to disable the setting on your device.
How to turn off ‘Background App Refresh’ on your iPhone
Disable Entirely
- Navigate to ‘Settings’
- Tap ‘General’
- Select ‘ Background App Refresh’
- Turn off ‘Background App Refresh’ entirely by choosing ‘Off’
Disable App Specific
- Navigate to ‘Settings’
- Scroll until you find the ‘DCI’ app
- If the toggle next to ‘Background App Refresh’ is on the right side that means the setting is enabled. To disable, drag the toggle to the left.
How to turn off ‘Background App Refresh’ on your Android
Disable App Specific
- From the start screen, pull down the notification bar for ‘Settings’
- Tap the gear symbol in the top right-hand corner
- In ‘Settings’, tap ‘Data Usage’
- From the ‘Mobile’ section, select ‘Mobile Data Usage’
- Scroll until you find the 'DCI' app beneath the usage graph
- If the toggle next to ‘Allow Background Data Usage’ is on the right side that means the setting is enabled. To disable, drag the toggle to the left.
